The Queensland Drought Mitigation Centre (QDMC) is a collaboration of national and international climate modelling expertise and has been established to facilitate the research, development and extension projects under the Drought and Climate Adaptation Program (DCAP). The QDMC is a collaboration between the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF), Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) and the University of Southern Queensland (USQ).
DCAP is a Queensland Government initiative to improve drought preparedness and resilience for Queensland producers. The program aims to do this by delivering a range of research, development and extension projects, improve seasonal forecasting and provide tools and systems that will support producers in their decision making.
Queensland experiences some of the highest rainfall variability in the world. For the opening of the QDMC, the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation produced a series of climate posters including the Queensland's extended wet/dry period poster. The maps on the poster show the analyses of the historical rainfall records from 1889–current year and reveals sequences of wet and dry periods, each lasting from 5 to 13 years. Our variable climate, especially long periods of drought, is one of the biggest challenges when running a successful grazing property.
